The College Grants Fee (UGC) has constituted a four-member fact-finding committee to research the disturbing case of a woman scholar who died by suicide on the campus of Fakir Mohan (Autonomous) School in Odisha’s Balasore. As per data, the panel will study harassment claims, compliance with anti-harassment insurance policies, and suggest corrective actions. The transfer comes amid nationwide outrage and requires accountability over the alleged inaction that preceded her loss of life.
In accordance with officers, the 20-year-old BEd second-year scholar had accused Samira Kumar Sahu, Head of the Training Division on the school, of sexually harassing her. Unable to bear the alleged harassment and lack of response from authorities, the coed took the intense step on Saturday, setting herself on hearth proper on the school premises. She died on the AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Monday night time after battling for all times for about 60 hours.
What did UGC Secretary say?
“A four-member panel has been fashioned to look at the circumstances surrounding the incident, together with availability and effectiveness of things comparable to institutional insurance policies, grievance redressal mechanism, anti-harassment measures adopted and scholar assist techniques,” stated UGC Secretary Sudeep Singh Jain. “The panel will study circumstances surrounding the incident, assess compliance with the stipulated regulatory provisions, and counsel measures to forestall such incidents in future,” he added.
The panel will probably be headed by Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha College Professor and UGC member Raj Kumar Mittal. The members of the panel embrace former UGC member Sushma Yadav, former Gujarat College vice chancellor Neerja Gupta and UGC Joint Secretary Ashima Mangla.
