India-Pakistan tensions: UNSC begins shut door consultations after UN chief’s name to ‘step again from brink’


Following the remarks on the present scenario between India and Pakistan by United Nations Secretary Common Antonio Guterres, the N Safety Council commenced closed-door consultations. Earlier, Guterres voiced concern over tensions between India and Pakistan.

United Nations:

As tensions between India and Pakistan escalate within the wake of the Pahalgam terrorist assault that took 26 lives, principally vacationers, the UN Safety Council commenced closed-door consultations on the present scenario. The event comes after Secretary Common Antonio Guterres voiced concern over tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours being “at their highest in years”.

Consultations at Pakistan’s request

The consultations come at Pakistan’s request, which is at the moment a non-permanent member of the highly effective 15-nation Safety Council. Greece, the president of the Council for the month of Could, scheduled the assembly for Could 5 within the afternoon.

The closed-door assembly will happen in a session room subsequent to the chamber, and never the UNSC Chamber the place Council members sit on the highly effective horseshoe desk.

Guterres’ message to India, Pakistan

Hours previous to the closed-door consultations, Guterres voiced concern over tensions between India and Pakistan being at “their highest in years”, saying, “It pains me to see relations reaching a boiling level.”

Whereas stressing that he understands the “uncooked emotions” following the “terrible terror assault” in Pahalgam, Guterres reiterated his sturdy condemnation of that assault, extending his condolences to the households of the victims.

“Focusing on civilians is unacceptable – and people accountable should be dropped at justice by way of credible and lawful means,” he mentioned.

Members of UNSC- Everlasting and non-permanent

Aside from the 5 veto-wielding everlasting members — China, France, Russia, the UK and the US — the ten non-permanent members within the Council are Algeria, Denmark, Greece, Guyana, Pakistan, Panama, South Korea, Sierra Leone, Slovenia and Somalia.

Earlier, Guterres spoke individually with Jaishankar and Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
