Opposition events nook BJP over diluting Panjab College’s senate and syndicate.

Opposition events, together with the Aam Aadmi Get together (AAP), the Congress, and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), on Saturday (November 1, 2025) cornered the Bharatiya Janata Get together (BJP)-led Central authorities on its choice to dissolve the senate and the syndicate of the Panjab College.

The transfer by the Heart trampled on Punjab’s hard-earned autonomy, educational freedom, and Constitutional rights, State Training Minister and AAP chief Harjot Singh Bains mentioned. “It’s a blatant assault on the very soul of Punjab,” he added.

Describing the transfer not as an administrative reform however as “an act of occupation”, Mr. Bains alleged there was a harmful design behind the choice to centralize management, crush Punjab’s distinct voice, and systematically rewrite the rules of federalism enshrined within the Indian Structure.

The SAD urged the Vice-President of India and Panjab College’s ex-officio Chancellor CP Radhakrishnan to withdraw the notification. In her letter to the varsity’s Chancellor, Bathinda Lok Sabha MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, appealed to Mr. Radhakrishnan to not change the democratic character of the college, and maintain elections to its syndicate.

The notification had just about made the syndicate and senate of the Panjab College a rubber stamp of the Central authorities, Ms. Badal mentioned. The choice had brought about consternation amongst Punjabis who felt the Panjab College, which was first established in Lahore in 1882, was a part of their shared heritage, she mentioned.

The proposal was an “try to saffronise a historic establishment like Panjab College”, Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring mentioned.

“Scrapping the senate and the syndicate of the Panjab College and changing these with nominated members is a blatantly crude try by the BJP and the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) to hijack a historic establishment of the nation,” Mr. Warring mentioned in an announcement.
